PHL Embassy and FilCom Celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Month
The Philippine Embassy in Damascus headed by its Cultural Officer, Kathleen S. Llarena, in cooperation with the Filipino Community in Syria (FCS) and Samahan ng mga Filipino sa Syria (SAMAFIL) conducted a cultural workshop entitled “Move with Malong” in celebration of the National Indigenous Peoples Month this October on 24 October 2021 at the Philippine Embassy Chancery.

Ms. Llarena with the participants dance the Kappa Malong Malong dance.
Ms. Llarena discussed in detail the intricacies and significance of Malong not only as a choreography tool as well as its relevance in the lifestyle of the Filipino-Muslim people. She also discussed its functions and taught the general rule and basic steps in dancing the Kappa Malong Malong dance.
The event served as an opportunity for the FILCOM to experience the immersive cultural dance with the intricate rhythms and steps through the sways of the Kappa Malong Malong dance and to bring out the elegance of Filipino performing arts to Filipinos abroad.
This cultural event benefitted a total of twenty (20) female participants composed of the members of the Filipino community in Damascus. COVID-19 Health protocols and security measures were observed during the entire event.
